چکیده

Histological studies have demonstrated sensory nerve endings in the salivary glands of mammals. SASYBIN1) observed Krause's and Pacinian corpuscles in the connective tissue of the salivary gland. BAUMANN" found sensory endings in the wall of the small excretory duct of the salivary gland, and SUZUKI" also reported encapsulated sensory end-organs, such as Vater-Pacini corpuscles, in the acino-ductal shifting part of a human salivary gland. The presence of nerve endings in the salivary glands strongly suggests that some sensory information may be transmitted to the brain from the salivary glands. However, so far as we are aware, no definite physiological evidence has been reported on afferent nerve fibers from the salivary glands and the physiologic function of these nerves remains obscure. In the present study, nerve fibers transmitting information from the salivary gland to the central nervous system were detected in the chorda tympani nerve of the dog, and the physiological characters and function of these sensory nerve fibers from the gland were evaluated.

Synchronous Parotid and Homolateral Submandibular Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma

Introduction: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign neoplasms of salivary glands. The simultaneous homolateral occurrence of these tumors in salivary glands is exceedingly rare.   Case Report: An adult female presenting to our OPD with the swelling of right-sided preauricular and submandibular regions was diagnosed with the pleomorphic adenoma based on fine needle aspiration c...

Pharyngocutaneous Fistula as a Rare Late Postoperative Complication Following Submandibulectomy: A Case Report

Introduction: Submandibular gland excision is the gold standard treatment for submandibular gland disease. Although submandibulectomy is a relatively standardized surgical procedure, complications are frequently reported. These complications include nerve paralysis or paresis, aesthetic sequelae, hematoma, salivary fistulas or sialoceles, wound infections, hypertrophic scars and inflammations c...

The effects of tannin-rich diet on protein composition of parotid and submandibular glands of Guinea Pig

Tannins are plant-derived polyphenolic compounds that are widely found in foods, particularly in fruits and beverages. These materials are water-soluble and able to precipitate proteins from aqueous solutions. It had been shown that feeding some animals such as rat and mouse with tannins mimicks the effects of isoproterenol on salivary glands. Tannins stimulate β-receptors by some indirect me...

A quantitative study of nerve fiber density in the submandibular gland of rats.

The route and three dimensional distribution of nerve terminals in the submandibular gland were investigated in rats using immunohistochemistry for the protein gene product (PGP) 9.5, as a marker of neuronal elements. Thick fiber bundles were found along the wall of the excretory duct. Many fine fibers from these thick bundles were distributed each lobule of the submandibular gland. A large num...

Schwannoma of the submandibular gland: a case report

INTRODUCTION Schwannoma is a benign, solitary, and slowly progressive encapsulated tumor originating from the sheath of myelinated nerve fibers. Schwannoma of the salivary gland is a particularly rare form of an extracranial neurogenic tumor. Here, we present an unusual case of a schwannoma of the submandibular gland in a 19-year-old man. Total excision of the submandibular gland resulted in co...
